From TIME magazine’s James Poniewozik:
Parks and Recreation may have lost the pit, but it still has its next-best running gag: the obnoxious WPA-era murals. (”We also need better, less offensive history.”) Just on a comedy level, “The Camel” hit repeatedly—both the unexpectedly glamorous Sewage Department and Ron’s orgasmic response to Andy’s shoeshine had me shrieking like a girl, and the mural-design competition was a compact commentary on the creative process generally. Mark is probably right to say that the least offensive, least thoughtful “mass appeal” mural idea is the most likely to win; one reason, though, that we like these characters is that each in their own way sticks to the purity of their uniquely screwy ideas. By the way, I’m pretty sure there’s a murinal in the Museum of Modern Art.
