Aziz Ansari to guest blog for GQ.com

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Aziz Ansari is guest blogging over at GQ.com for the week!

Along with an embedded clip of his recent Tonight Show appearance, here’s how Aziz introduced his new one-week venture:

Hi GQ Blog readers,

I’m guest posting on the GQ blog this week in an effort to hawk my new standup special Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening. It debuts on Comedy Central on Sunday, January 17th at 10pm and is available on DVD and CD on January 19th.

I know there’s a lot of speculation about what’s happening with NBC’s late night lineup. Well I’m not supposed to leak this, but who cares. Here’s the confirmed report I got from a higher up at NBC:

10:00 – 11:00 pm: Reruns of That’s So Raven
11:35: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
12:05: The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show
1:05: Stargate: The Talk Show with Richard Dean Anderson

Still no word on what’s happening with Conan or The Magic Hour with Magic Johnson…

GQ’s Sitcom of the Year: Parks and Recreation

Friday, December 11th, 2009

From GQ magazine:

…While no one was watching, [Parks and Recreation's] focus changed. Amy Poeher’s parks commissioner Leslie softened. The limp romance between Mark (Paul Schneider) and Ann (Rashida Jones) moved to the background. The true lunatic weirdness of the show—from Chris Pratt’s pit-dwelling, shoe-shining, Deal Or No Deal-auditioning Andy to Nick Offerman’s lover of brown haired ladies and breakfast food Ron Swanson—started to emerge. It’s got the deepest bench on TV. (Aziz Anzari = brilliant. Aubrey Plaza is our biggest entertainment crush right now.) The best guest stars. (LouisCK, Megan Mullally, Fred Armisan.) And, of course, Amy Poehler, whose warmth and willingness to totally humiliate herself confirmed what we always knew: she’s one of the best comedians working today.

Parks and Recreation is absurd. Hilarious. Packed with polished jokes, unexpected turns, and boasting real heart. Simply put, this is the funniest show on television right now. America, start watching. You’re missing something special.

GQ’s Q&A with Ron ‘F-ing’ Swanson

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

From GQ:

What do you think contributed to Parks & Rec’s creative resurgence?
It’s like if you went into AAA baseball and randomly picked 20 guys to be your team. They’re gonna have some skills, but you’ve got to get together and see who does what. Then you go, okay, here’s my starting rotation, here’s my relief pitchers. So we got this gang together, and basically we warmed up to what is now being considered on fire. Mike Schur answered this question the other night at a panel. They considered the first six episodes [from season one] to be the pilot, to feel our way around Pawnee.

Ron Swanson’s gotten a lot more to do this season, too.
Mike Schur seems to be leader of the fetid fermentation of Swanson. When he came to me and said, “You’re going to have an alter ego who plays jazz saxophone”—I go, “How do you see inside me?” As long as the show is on, I will preach about the writers. I couldn’t believe these guys could create a role that celebrates exactly the weirdness that had always kept me from getting network jobs.

You just did an episode playing opposite your wife. How did she get involved?
Early on, it was established that I had an ex-wife named Tammy who I always talk about what a bitch she was. Mike came up with the story about Tammy, approached me and said, “Would it be cool with you and Megan if she was this woman who’s so horrible?” And I said, “Yeah, that would be amazing.” If they had just cast another funny actress, there’s a politeness where we wouldn’t have gone as far. But since we have literally already been inside each other, well, we know the depths to which we can safely go.
