From Crafts for a Cause:

My name is Binki Shapiro, and I play in the band Little Joy. In an effort to raise money for the relief efforts in earthquake-devastated Haiti, I’ve rallied a bunch of artists to contribute custom-made artwork — t-shirts, tote bags and other personalized items — for the Crafts For A Cause auction. All proceeds will go to Artists for Peace and Justice, an amazing charitable organization founded by my dear friend Paul Haggis.

One item up for auction is the infamous “Shapes” painting from Parks and Recreation’s “The Camel” signed by Aziz Ansari, Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aubrey Plaza, Paul Schneider, Nick Offerman and Chris Pratt.

The auction begins March 15 @ 8 a.m.

What was the genesis of “Woman of the Year”?
We at first just thought it’d be funny if Ron won an award for work Leslie had done. Then one of the writers pitched that it should be from a feminist organization, as a double whammy. The thing that made us laugh the hardest was picturing Ron’s face with his big mustache on a plaque that says “Woman Of The Year.” I think we’re making T-shirts with that design on them.

Nick told me he’d love to have his wife Megan Mullally guest-star eight times a season. Will she be returning anytime soon?
Almost immediately after that [November 5th] episode we started trying to get her back, but she’s doing a play in New York right now. We’d love to have her back [as Tammy]. She was super funny.

One thing you seem to have stumbled upon is the “Will they, won’t they?” thing with Andy (Chris Pratt) and April (Aubrey Plaza). Was that in your original plan?
It really wasn’t. That came from a moment in the last episode of Season 1: Andy was talking about his band, and we saw that April was staring at him a bit intensely. We thought: Maybe there’s something there? Then as soon as we saw footage of their B-story in “Hunting Trip,” which was so fun to shoot and the two of them were so fun together, we were like, “This is our romantic intrigue for the rest of the year.”

We’re going to be meeting April’s family soon. Any fun casting there?
It’s not stunt casting; we just found two really good actors that we like [as her parents]. We also got a funny girl to play the sister. All you had to do for that entire audition was roll your eyes. We then chose the one who looked the most like Aubrey.

Tell me about the episode airing later this season that Amy Poehler wrote.
It’s the third-to-last one of the year, and the premise is that Leslie is volunteering to cohost a cable access telethon for charity, and her shift is from 2 to 6 in the morning. It’s all about her trying to get through the wee hours of the morning.

Party Down star Adam Scott is joining the cast of Parks and Recreation, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

Scott will make his first appearance in this season’s last two episodes and return for Season 3 as a series regular. NBC renewed the Thursday night comedy in January.

The 36-year-old actor will play a love interest for parks and rec department head Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), according to Variety. “Adam is one of the funniest and most versatile performers around,” series executive producer Michael Schur told the trade paper. “When we designed the character he is going to play, we used him as the dream scenario of who we could get.”

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Rob Lowe is nearing a deal to join the cast of TV’s best new comedy, Parks and Recreation.

I’m told that Lowe, who, as you know, is leaving Brothers & Sisters at season’s end, would appear in multiple episodes of Parks and Rec beginning later this season and extending into next. (NBC wisely went ahead and renewed the comedy for a third season.)

Details about Lowe’s character are being kept under the tightest of wraps. I should know more as soon as his deal becomes official.

To answer your first question, Will’s guest gig wasn’t even driven by his close personal relationship to Amy Poehler (her being his wife/baby mama and all that), but rather by his relationship with P-Rex boss Mike Schur. Will says, “Mike Schur who runs the show over there with Greg Daniels is a good friend of ours. Mike called me and said, ‘Hey, we’re writing this character right now that we think would be great for you.’ He said, ‘What do you think?’ and I said, ‘I’d love to do it.’” As for the A.D. movie, Will says, “We’re going to be making it later on. Depends on when the script gets finished. Hopefully that will be sometime soon. Because I’ve been working with Mitch [Hurwitz] for almost a year now [on the Fox pilot], my schedule is his schedule. I’m available when he’s available.”

• “We have an episode in a couple of weeks about Tom getting divorced and him coming to terms with it,” said Aziz Ansari. “It’s pretty emotional stuff for Tom.” Unfortunately, sparks will continue to fly between Ron (Nick Offerman) and Tom’s soon-to-be ex-wife. “It doesn’t seem like Tom will take it too well,” Offerman said. “A little bit of information unfolds before the holidays, but no deals will be sealed.”
• Leslie Knope will find herself in a possible love triangle. Will Arnett — Poehler’s real-life hubby — and Justin Theorux will guest-star in that January episode as her suitors.
• “You’re going to see more scenes with Andy and April,” said Aubrey Plaza. “There could be a love connection for them.”
• In Thursday’s episode, Parks takes a shot at a mystery episode. “They go on a hunting trip and they’re hunting quails at a secret park ranger station that Ron has, for years, used as his private hunting lodge,” executive producer Greg Daniels said. “Leslie insists on going when she finds out about it, bringing a lot of non-hunters. There are a lot of guns.” What’s the mystery? One of the parks department members takes a shot to the back of the head and the gang must figure out whose gun it came from.

NBC has just confirmed to us that Amy Poehler’s husband, the also hilarious Will Arnett, is coming to Parks and Recreation.

He’ll come on board for one episode that will air in January. (Most likely Jan. 14, according to NBC, but no firm date has been set.)

According to NBC, Will is playing an “MRI tech,” which means that either someone we know and love in Pawnee is headed for the hospital (our money’s on the always clutsy Andy, a k a Chris Pratt), or Will will have scenes with Ann (Rashida Jones) who works there.

Hey, what’s that smell? Oh, I know — it’s the ink drying on Will Arnett’s Parks and Recreation contract. An NBC spokesperson confirms that Will Arnett will guest star opposite real-life wife Amy Poehler on her creatively-resurgent comedy in early 2010. He’ll play a possible suitor for Poehler’s character, Leslie. Incidentally, Arnett appears in the same episode that marks the arrival of Justin Theroux, who also happens to be playing a love interest for Leslie. You know what I’m smelling now? Comedic fireworks!

Actor-producer-screenwriter-all-around Renaissance man Justin Theroux is joining Parks and Recreation (a.k.a. this fall’s most improved comedy) in a major recurring role, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Theroux, whose previous tube work includes stints on The District, Ally McBeal, and Sex and the City, has been cast as a friend of Ann’s (Rashida Jones) and a potential love interest for Leslie (Amy Poehler). His first episode is slated to air in early 2010.

• At Saturday night’s Paley Center P-Rex celebration, Amy Poehler teased that hubby Will Arnett might soon be joining her on the small screen (yay!): “I hope, so I think you will,” she spilled with that signature Amy grin we know and love.
• We were also told that Amy’s adorably awkward Leslie Knope would be involved in a salacious sex scandal.
• Sadly, Will is not knocking boots with Amy on P-Rex right now (though we know he’s already on the NBC payroll, ahem, 30 Rock), but show runner Mike Schur (Mose!) did tell us that “some exciting potential guest stars, pretty big stars and comedians” are in the works and that names will emerge in the next few weeks.
• As for Leslie, the poor girl “accidentally gets involved with this big sex scandal, and it spirals out of control,” Aziz Ansari (Tom) told us of the P-Rex craziness. As Schur explained: “There are rumors swirling about another city councilman scandal—who was disgraced by cave sex in the ‘Practice Date’ episode—and Leslie ends up getting photographed with him at a bar late at night by a tabloid newspaper.”
• Of course, Leslie becomes the town leper, even though she only had the city’s best interest at heart. “Leslie has set up an elaborate and beautiful Santa’s Village on the lot; she’s just trying to do this nice thing and this derails it, and it gets to the point where the press is chasing her around.”
  Sadly, Leslie’s headed for a split with Dave the Cop. “A lot of really heavy stuff happens in the next couple weeks. It’s really good!” Amy teased. “We were so lucky to get Louis C.K., but he’s starting his own show.”
• At least a few P-Rexers are getting lucky in love. Aubrey Plaza gushed about an April-Andy (Chris Pratt) romance, and from what you’ll see in Thursday’s episode, it’s going to be uncomfortably fantastic.

I think [executive producers] Mike Schur and Greg Daniels are so committed to the realistic element that I’m the red herring there. As long as I’m not involved, I feel like they could do a little crossing over.

TVGuide.com: Fred Armisen is guest-starring this season. Who does he play?
Jones: He’s one of the funniest people on the planet. He plays the head of a small Venezuelan town’s parks department, and he comes to visit. They’re like our sister city and we have total misconceptions about him and his department. We think they’re small-town-small-minded, and they turn out to be a lot more sophisticated than us.

But the big question is what can fans expect in the series’ second season? Ansari says this season is all about learning more about the characters: “The characters you didn’t get to see much of in season one” will return in full force and greater numbers. Following Ansari and his role as the unlikeable Tom, fans will be excited to see a soft side to the man, according to Poehler, which is interesting for the actor playing him as Ansari has a blast playing “a douchebag.” While Ansari says he would never like to hang out with Tom, the character is fun to play. Fans will also learn more about Tom’s wife and see him judge a beauty contest. In Leslie’s world Poehler sums up her characters story this season, saying “We’re all just figuring out what Leslie’s motivations are. The upcoming season is a lot of enjoying the crazy world Leslie creates for herself and the crazy people in it.” Leslie will also be dealing with her unfortunate breakup with Mark and the conflict that arises when comic Louis C.K. arrives as a love interest. Poehler says, “Unfortunately her feelings for Mark…are not completely over” but the relationship with C.K. is seen as Leslie meeting a new guy and not understanding that he’s interested in her.

They have all the money in the world because of their oil and they [don't understand] why Pawnee’s parks department is so rinky-dink.”

Schur says Armisen and his fellow Venezuelans “take a real shine” to Nick Offerman’s Ron “because they value his mustache. They call him El Jefe the whole time. They revere him and they present him with all sorts of gifts and stuff.”

Tell me about yourself. Who are you? Where are you? What are you?

JOHN: We’re just a couple of geeks who like Star Wars & Parks and Rec. We’re Florida residents and we’re mainly independent film makers/freelance videographers.

WILL: Speak for your geek-self! I’m not the one who owns FOUR different Jabba the Hutt action figures… Okay, maybe I am. Anyway, we’re roommates who work as graphic designers at our day jobs, and do film-work by night. I work for Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.

JOHN: And I’m also a musician in the steampunk band The Cog is Dead.

So you’ve said the reason you made Hutts and Recreation is because you sing “Jabba the Hutt” along to the theme of Parks and Recreation every time you watch the show. What is it about Parks (or the theme) that made you think of the Star Wars character?

JOHN: It’s kind of hard to pinpoint what made us think of Jabba. I just have the habit of making up stupid lyrics to theme music. We think I may have been the one to sing it first, but we can’t really even remember.

WILL: It’s all a blur. And it’s all in the syllables. There’s no actual thematic or conceptual connection. If there were… it would cease being “art.” The decision to actually go through with making the video, however, only occurred because the image of seeing Jabba next to his name repeatedly standing in for each cast member was so damn funny to us.

How many people are behind the video?

WILL: Three. John’s the technical mastermind, I’m the Star Wars scene expert, and our third roommate, Chris, joined us in the singing of the piece.

How much time did it take you to make?

JOHN: Probably about five hours. We just went through the Parks and Rec opening shot by shot and tried to pic what we thought was the best replacement for each clip. We were careful to recreate the titles and framing of each shot as closely as we could to the original opening. Then we each took turns laying down vocals to truly re-create the bizarre experience we have in our living room every Thursday night when the show begins.

WILL: Note that every time there’s a shot of “The Pit” in the Parks and Rec opening, there’s a shot of the Sarlacc in the Great Pit of Carkoon in the Star Wars parody

Parks and Recreation’s production coordinator said the production office loves your video. Show runner Michael Schur said the same thing about the writers’ room. GQ magazine named it viral video of the day on Tuesday. What’s running through your head?

WILL: Primarily, “What The!?” I mean, of all the goofy oddball nonsensical pairings to be well-received… why’d THIS one hit the spot? It might just be that Parks and Rec viewers were hungry for any fan video/parody of their favorite show, or maybe just that deep down each of us secretly maintains an ongoing love affair with Jabba the Hutt, but from a creative standpoint I’d like to think this bodes well for public reception of our style of humor. We have a massively epic adventure-comedy indie film we’re nearing completion on called “Flashback,” and when we finally unleash that on the world, we can only hope the welcome will be as warm! Ultimately, it’s just been an honor to get kudos directly from the Parks and Rec writers and crew. They crack us up weekly, and it’s nice to think we were able to put smiles on a few of their faces in return.

JOHN: I think my reaction was just, “HOLY CRAP, that was FAST!” When making the video we joked, “Wouldn’t it be great if the writers of the show found this?” and we kind of hoped they might eventually… but literally TWO days after we uploaded it Alan Yang and Michael Schur were tweeting about it! Then Will called me and said, “We’re in Entertainment Weekly!” It’s basically the reaction we had kind of hoped it would get, but much faster and on a much larger scale than either of us could have anticipated. In fact, Alan Yang just told me that Amy Poehler says she likes it. So yes, we’re just a bit excited, surprised and a bit confused by the immediate popularity of this absurd joke of ours. But in the end we’re just glad so many people like it, including those who make the show.
